seat of Gosper County, Nebraska.
As of the 2000
census, Elwood
had a population of 761. Elwood
is a traditional small town in
central Nebraska. The center
of town
features several downtown businesses
offering a friendly atmosphere
with personable service.
The businesses of Elwood are essential
for comfort and good living. In
the center of downtown you will
find the local grocery store. Not
too far away from there you can
find a convenience store and gas
station which also has a small
motel. There is a drive-in coffee
shop, restaurant, implement dealer,
and a well drilling business. Elwood
has an attorney, real estate brokers,
insurance companies, newspaper,
two banks, and commodities dealers.
There is also large grain handling,
small manufacturing, irrigation
and salvage, a locker plant, and
construction companies. A funeral
home recently opened and a number
of small antique stores are in
the area. You will even find a
doctor's office and
pharmacy located in town. There
are fifteen new lots that have
recently been rezoned for the building
of residences.
The Elwood community feels blessed
with an excellent and beautiful
recreation area. There are several
area lakes and a reservoir for
camping and fishing. Wildlife surrounds
the area for turkey, pheasant,
and deer hunting. The Gosper County
Fair is held in Elwood and has
excellent rodeo grounds. The community
owns its own carnival and volunteers
work to host the fair and carnival.
People come from miles around to
attend this yearly event.
A caring and well staffed Assisted
Living and Care Center is located
not too far from the center of
town. There is a feeling of home-life
that pleases many that are residents
at the center. The local Gosper
County Senior Center features several
activities including an exercise
program, quilting, puzzles, dominos,
card playing, and bingo. The Senior
Center is also available for various
events.
Residents of Elwood take pride
in their community and play an
active role in its care. The local
newspaper keeps residents informed
of local
news,
sports,
funerals, and coming events. The
people of Elwood have worked hard
to keep their fire department and
emergency medical staff well equipped.
There is also an excellent library
as well as three churches located
in town.
Elwood is very proud of its local
school system. We have a Kindergarten
through 12th grade building that
includes the services needed by
the students of the community.
The school has approximately 290
students enrolled for the 2004-2005
school year. The board has strived
to keep the school updated with
the latest technology. In the last
five years an addition was built
to the school building.
We welcome you to one of the nicest
town in Nebraska and hope that
you keep us in mind when planning
a vacation or relocation.
Sincerely,
Elwood Chamber of Commerce
